Happy National Donut Day, America!

Nothing is better than free stuff.  Especially when that free stuff happens to be delicious, fattening, sugary treats.That's why today, June 1, is a great day to be an American.  Today is National Donut Day, which means that you have the unique opportunity to snag some "free" dounuts at various chains across the country.If you're a Dunks guy like I am, you'll get a donut free with the purchase of a beverage.  You may quibble with me that it's not really free if you have to buy something else to get it, and to that I say shut up and enjoy your free donut.If you don't buy that logic, you can check out a Krispy Kreme instead, where they claim to be giving away free donuts with no strings attached.The generally overlooked and underrated Honey Dew Donuts is giving away free donuts too, but only one flavor.  But when that flavor includes Oreos, it's tough to complain.Supposedly there are some more serious roots to National Donut Day.  Here's a quote from the website:

National Donut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a “donut”)—an edible, torus-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened and is mmm, mmm, yummy.

Whatever.  All I heard when I read that quote was  "free donuts".  I'm fully planning on getting fat and sassy on National Donut Day, and I hope you are too.
