Boston's Food Trucks - Judging a Book (Truck) By Its Cover?
First and foremost, dearest readers, I apologize for my absence. Between family commitments, insanity at work, Phil's week long vacation business trip to Las Vegas, and an impromptu trip to NYC, it's been tough to get the motivation to post. But after Phil's constant threats to rename the blog "Phil On Food," here I am, ready to rock.I want to talk today about the importance of aesthetics for Boston's food truck scene. Food trucks are really gaining traction in Boston after first driving into the Hub a couple of years ago - now, we boast over 19 food trucks serving up a variety of meals and desserts across the city. My mom laughs about all of the food truck "fad," giggling as she pictures all of these "fancy city people" waiting in line on sidewalks for food out of the side of the truck. In my opinion, there's something exciting about having a different truck outside your work every day, like a constant rotation of pop-up restaurants. I'm loving the Boston food truck scene right now, and if the Day After Tomorrow-esque arctic chill in Boston ever freaking breaks, you can bet that I'll be hitting up those trucks and blogging about them like a maniac. The main issue (other than the nasty weather) preventing me from visiting certain trucks is what they look like. Harsh, I know. But I work in the heart of the city, the world is my lunch-time oyster. I can go anywhere I want and be back before my lunch hour is up - which is why the appearance of certain food trucks boggles my mind. Take these shots from BostonFoodTruck.wordpress.com as a comparison:Which looks more appealing to you, honestly? The bland, unfortunate-looking, Staff Meal? Or the colorful, "prepared fresh daily" seafood fare of Go Fish? I mean, come on. It's a no brainer. When you're trying to market a food truck, you really have only two things working for you: the visual appeal of your truck, and your ability to drive to where the customers are. So why give up one of your only advantages? I've had Go Fish (specifically the delicious Tuna Caesar Wrap), and it's amazing. The tragic thing in all this is that Staff Meal sounds amazing. From their website:
"Staff Meal is a meal prepared by restaurant staff, for the restaurant's staff. We like to think we've made some pretty tasty staff meals over the years and we'd like to share those meals with everyone."
I think that the most appealing food gimmick ever is food prepared by chefs, for chefs. That's why I love Top Chef, and that's why I assume that I would love Staff Meal. And yet, because it looks gross, unclean, and generally boring, I've never even stopped to look at the menu.Moral of the story: Food trucks owners - make sure your trucks look as appealing as they taste, so that you can maximize your business (instead of losing jerks like me who apparently never learned that it's a bad idea to judge a book by its cover).
